A term used to describe the shape of a sound's volume over time. It is made up of four stages: attack, decay, sustain, and release. In synthesizers and other instruments, the envelope is usually controlled by four knobs which determine how quickly the sound reaches its peak
level, how much the
level decreases after it reaches its peak, how long the sound will sustain its peak
level, and how quickly it will fade out.
